Management Information System Program

Program Description

The Advanced Diploma in Management Information Systems aims to synthesize business knowledge while cultivating specialized competence in information management. Management Courses, Financial Courses and a number of IT courses like System analysis, programming, Web Design are included in the program to make it suitable for those who seek careers at the crossroads of information technology and Business and Management. The program has 101 CH and is equipped to combine technical skills with management skills.

Admission Requirements
  • A “General Education Diploma” (GED) with the following conditions: A General Education Diploma (12th standard) or certified equivalent with a minimum D grade in (pure or applied Mathematics) and English language.

  • A minimum of 500 in TOEFL, (or IELTS - 5 overall (academic); or TOEFL IBT-61)[1] or must take the English Placement Test (PT) at UOB.

  • Must take the Math and IT Placement Test (PT) at UOB and shall be placed at foundation/credit courses as per the PT result.

  • Students enrolled in the GFP will have to complete it in no more than two academic years. 

  • Students shall pass the College Admission Test and/or the College Interview as required.

     Exemption: A student may be exempted from the Foundation Program area requirements by presenting an equivalent qualification, (IELTS or TOEFL, SAT and (ICDL/IC3 in English) or passing the challenge exam.

Program Objectives
  • To develop graduates with the knowledge and skills required for success in their career as entry level MIS Professionals.

  • To develop the ability to use business and computing knowledge to make informed decisions while modelling information systems solutions for business problems.

Student Outcomes
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the facts, concepts, principles and theories relating to management and information technology

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the design principles and programming constructs in order to generate smart IT solutions.

  • Apply managerial concepts and principles in the development and use of MIS

  • Solve business problems using appropriate quantitative and analytical techniques

  • Analyze a problem and design a solution based on an organization’s resources, requirements and needs

  • Work effectively in a team and collaborate with others to accomplish a common goal

  • Communicate effectively to a range of audience through oral, written and visual presentation

Career Path

Business organizations have a strong need for individuals who understand the various business functions and who also understand the role of ICTs in a contemporary organizational environment. Given the rate of technological advances and the increasing amount of information available today, there is every reason to expect there to be a wide range of opportunities for MIS professionals within nearly every department of organizations of all sizes and industries. Potential career paths include

  • Systems/Business Analyst, dealing with business information requirements, manual and automated procedures, and business problems and opportunities in order to design improved information services.

  • Software Engineer, research, design, and develop computer software systems in conjunction with hardware product development.

  • Programmer/Analyst, develop, test, and document computer programs, applying knowledge of programming techniques and computer systems.

  • Development and Standardization of processes, procedures, and documents.

  • E-Commerce Developer, design, implement, and maintain the internet and e-commerce presence associated with an organization.

  • Database Analyst, apply knowledge of database technologies and tools to manage, organize, and utilize the vast amount of information available to an organization.

  • Business Intelligence Analyst, use analysis tools to query and model data in repositories and generate reports and charts, to enhance organizational decision-making.

  • Project Management, application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities to meet the project requirements.
